Homeless/Transition Housing Students

If you are homeless and need guidance on shelter/housing, available resources and what to do next: Call 2-1-1 anytime or the Housing Solutions Center at (360) 473-2035

McKinney-Vento Act:

If you have a child living in temporary housing (including but not limited to parks, motels, hotels, cars, doubling up with other families, etc.), they may be able to qualify for McKinney-Vento status. Under the McKinney-Vento Act students are provided protections: enrollment and transportation to the school of origin, receive free lunch and breakfast.

Call or visit for details: ID, Haircuts, food boxes, bread & produce, breakfast and lunch (see FreeMeal Sites), diapers and toiletries, utility assistance, bus tokens and passes, resource for blankets and winter outerwear. Community Voice Mail: provides free voice mail for those who need to receive messages but have no phone.
  • ID Card: Go to any branch of the Dept. of Licensing (courthouse,Wheaton Way, etc.) and pick up a copy of the brochure, 'Identification and Residence Requirements'. If you need help with this, see The Salvation Army.
  • Blankets/Clothes/To Go Food Bags: Taking It To The Streets Ministries - Pastor Art at (360) 689-3219 and asst. MaryAnn at (360) 550-6926. For Kitsap and Seattle: You can designate where you'd like your gifts to go, otherwise they go where most needed.

Drug and Alcohol Awareness

When surveyed, the majority of KHS students stated that they chose not to drink or do drugs.

  • Al-Anon (which includes Alateen for younger members) offers hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics. No matter what relationship you have with an alcoholic, whether they are still drinking or not, all who have been affected by someone else’s drinking are welcome at Al-Anon/Alateen.
