Assessments

At Kingston High School (KHS), we're committed to understanding and supporting our students' academic progress and success. A key part of this process involves various assessments that help us gauge our students' understanding of essential subjects and skills. Here's a snapshot of the different assessments we employ:

  1. Smarter Balanced Assessments: These assessments focus on English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics. Administered in grades 3-8 and 11, they are adaptive, meaning that the difficulty of the questions changes based on a student's responses. The results provide us with invaluable insight into individual student progress and the effectiveness of our curricula.

  2. Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS): Administered to students in grades 5, 8, and 11, the WCAS assesses student understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). By evaluating a student's grasp of scientific concepts, their ability to analyze scientific phenomena, and apply this knowledge in real-world contexts, we can ensure our science instruction is effective and relevant.

  3. Classroom Assessments: These include tests, quizzes, projects, and presentations that our dedicated teachers implement throughout the academic year. They give us a nuanced and immediate understanding of our students' learning process, allowing us to tailor instruction and support accordingly.

  4. Portfolios and Performance-Based Assessments: In various courses, students may compile portfolios or engage in performance-based assessments. These methods showcase a student's growth and learning over time and highlight their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  5. College Readiness Assessments: We also offer college readiness tests like the PSAT, SAT and ACT, which provide benchmarks for students as they prepare for post-secondary education.

It's important to remember that while these assessments are useful tools, they represent only a part of the total picture of a student's academic ability. At KHS, we believe in the diverse strengths and potential of each of our students and use a multifaceted approach to support their learning and growth.
