Latest Updates

Dear Buccaneer Families;

As always, I hope this finds you well. There are a number of items you should be aware of. Rather than flood your inboxes with a number of emails, here’s a quick overview of them all:

-Next Year: Please know we are already working hard to explore options for the Fall. Some version of remote learning is likely. Our goal is to preserve as much of the high school experience as we can. Public schools serve so many more needs than just credits. Until we return, we are working to improve every phase of remote learning: communication, technology, feedback, and grading. We are exploring ways to provide access to clubs, athletics, activities, and friends too.

-Item returns/fines: Starting with seniors on June 4th, we are asking that all school district property: textbooks, computers, gear, etc. be dropped off to the school between the times of _10:00 AM_ and _3:00 PM_. There will be one point of entry at the main entrance to the school and students must sign in so that we are able to ensure appropriate physical distancing. Fines are assessed for missing items, and diplomas will not be issued until all fines are cleared.

The underclassmen, grades 9 – 11, may return items on the following dates:

June 9                   10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

June 10                 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

June 11                 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

June 12                 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

-Incomplete Grades: Students may be issued either an A or Incomplete for each of their classes. We have sent emails to families of students that may be issued an “incomplete” in accordance with our new grading guidelines. An additional letter will be sent home by June 12th as well. Please encourage your students to remain connected to the extent possible during this difficult time. Note: Seniors’ last day of classes is June 12th.

-Graduation & Diploma Hand Out: We are hard at work creating a virtual graduation complete with photos, speeches, and individual recognition for graduates. This will be released via a link on our website at the same time as our regularly scheduled graduation: June 13th, at 1:00 PM. We are also working on a more special than usual diploma pick-up opportunity on June 26th. This will include a photo opportunity, additional recognition, and the actual diploma (which historically are not included in the actual ceremony). Details to come.

-Special Thanks: I would be remiss if I did not thank KHS Boosters, our Grad Night committee, and so many local businesses for supporting and celebrating our seniors. For example:

- KHS Booster Club has organized a socially distant celebration at Village Greens at 1:00 PM on June 6th.

- Grad Night Committee has graciously paid for an keep-sake advertisement in the May 29th Kingston Community News.

- Our community at large have used their signs and parking lots to celebrate our seniors.

Thank you all so much!

-Farewells & Welcomes: If you haven’t heard already, as happens sometimes, a couple of the heartbeats of our school are leaving.

-Athletic Director Richard Henert has accepted a position closer to his parents at his home school in Wisconsin. Richard is an icon of our school and not easily replaced. We will miss his calm and assuring presence. He’s one of the best I’ve ever worked with.

-Assistant Principal Melissa Super-Greene is moving to the other side of the water to spread her wings at Lake Washington High School. “Super,” as I often heard her called, is aptly named. She took time to know every student and seemed to have special powers that made her able to combine discipline with heart. Not an easy task. There’s so much she did to serve students that nobody ever saw.

We wish both of them the very, very best! Thank you so much for your time as Bucs.

On the plus side, we were able to hire a promising new Athletic Director to replace the legendary Mr. Henert. Our own Ed Call has accepted the position moving forward. As an accomplished volleyball and baseball coach with years of relevant experience and an existing relationship with the community, Ed will no doubt be an excellent AD!

That’s certainly enough for one email. Thanks to you all for all your support. As always, reach out to us if there are any questions or concerns.
