COURSE DESCRIPTION 2017-2018

Students will have the opportunity to earn 10 quarter credits (5 per semester) through CWUs Cornerstone program. Cost to students is $55 per credit ($275 per semester). These credits will transfer to most 4 year universities. Each student will want to confirm this through their college prior to registering for the Cornerstone Program. Students must be in at least their sophomore year to participate. Students/Parents are responsible for tuition and it must be paid directly to CWU.
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of the high school math series (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2)
To receive CWU credit students must earn a 35 or higher on the College Algebra Accuplacer
Course Overview:
PreCalculus is a course series that helps prepare students to take Calculus and Calculus-based science courses. Tests and homework assignments reflect the ability of students to handle rigorous assessments at the university level. The two-course series includes an in-depth study of polynomials, exponents, logarithms, rational functions, and trigonometry. Time allowing well move into other areas of math such as the polar plane, matrices, conic sections and a little introduction into calculus. All of these topics will be integrated into solving real-world problems directly using mathematical skills.
Basic course goals include:
Analyzing functions and equations numerically, algebraically, and graphically.
Modeling real-world problems with appropriate functions.
Understanding the transformation of functions and connection between functions.
Using technology to help solve problems, experiment, interpret results and verify conclusions.
Determining the reasonableness of solutions, including sign, size, relative accuracy, and units of measurement.
Appreciating that the procedure for solving a problem is as important as the answer, and that a variety of procedures can be used to solve most problems.

Supplies:
PreCalculus textbook
Notebook with graph paper
Pencils and erasers
Calculator* (Required: Graphing calculator, TI-84plus, or Casio Graphing recommended)
Grading:
Assessment (70%):
Quizzes (20 points each): Routine quizzes will be given through each unit. Students may use any notes they have taken. Quizzes may not be retaken.
Tests (100 points each): Traditional tests will be given at the end of every unit and will be cumulative for the semester. Students may retake tests once outside class hours if all homework for the unit is turned in.
Projects/Performance Tasks (50 points each): Projects and Performance Tasks provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge in an applied setting. Some will done in class and some will be done at home. Projects turned in on time can be revised for a higher grade.
CWU Cumulative Final (20%): The semester final will be provided by CWU and given in class. This is worth a significant portion of the grade. All students will take this final regardless of whether they are earning college credit. As this is a final, it may not be retaken.
Assignments (10%): Homework will be given nightly and are worth 2 points each. Primarily, homework should strengthen what was learned in class. Secondly, homework should provide students an opportunity to know where gaps in their learning exist and come prepared the next day to discuss those gaps. Homework is graded solely for completion, students are responsible for ensuring they understand and worked correctly. Time will be dedicated daily for reviewing homework.
Late Work Policy:
All assignments and projects are due the day of the unit test. Late work will not be accepted. E-mail submissions are acceptable should students not be able to attend that day. Should an extenuating circumstance prevent timely completion please make arrangements AHEAD OF TIME.
Technology Usage:
My classroom has a strict no cell-phone usage policy. Students may not have them out for any reason. Phone usage in class (even for academic purposes) has been shown to lower retention, focus, and drops standardized test scores. We want everyone to be as successful as possible, hence the reason for this policy.
Office Hours and Tutoring:
I am available before school from 7:30-7:45 solely for PreCalculus and after school from 2:25-2:55 PM for students who need extra help or one-on-one time. Thursday tutorial is also available with prior arrangement (permanent placement can be made if desired). If you begin struggling please let me know immediately and we will get you the help you need to succeed.
