COURSE DESCRIPTION 2017-2018

Course Overview:
At the end of this course, we want all students to confidently say:
I am familiar with function notation, characteristics, and vocabulary.
I can write an equation and graph linear functions.
I can identify and graph basic quadratic and exponential functions.
I can simplify and solve algebraic equations and inequalities.
I can solve a two-variable system of equations and inequalities.
I can effectively use exponent rules.
I can use factoring to solve equations.
I can use problem solving skills to solve real-world problems using algebraic knowledge.

Respect that all of us are humans and come with limitations, strengths, and weaknesses.

Supplies:
3-Ring binder with graph paper (may be shared with another class)
Pencils and erasers
Calculator* (Required Minimum: Scientific 2-line; Graphing recommended)
Grading:
Assessment (80%):
Quizzes (20 points each): Routine quizzes will be given through each unit. Students may use any notes they have taken. Quizzes may not be retaken.
Tests (100 points each): Traditional tests will be given at the end of every unit and will be cumulative for the year. Students may retake tests once outside class hours if all homework for the unit is turned in, an appointment is made with Mr. Shionalyn, and with a signed acknowledgement from a parent/guardian.
Projects/Performance Tasks (50 points each): Projects and Performance Tasks provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge in an applied setting. Some will done in class and some will be done at home. Projects turned in on time can be revised for a higher grade.
Semester Final (200 points): The cumulative final at the end of each semester is a chance for students to demonstrate retention of knowledge AND provide another opportunity to demonstrate mastery not shown on prior tests. Notes may be used.
Assignments (20%): Homework will be given nightly and are worth 2 points each. Homework should be 10 minutes or less and serves two purposes. Primarily, homework should strengthen what was learned in class. Secondly, homework should provide students an opportunity to know where gaps in their learning exist and come prepared the next day to discuss those gaps.
Text:
Students should check-out Holt McDougal Algebra 1 for the library. This may be kept at home for practice and homework for the duration of the year. Should you wish to access online resources (videos, extra practice, etc.) please let Mr. Shionalyn know.
Late Work Policy:
All assignments and projects are due the day of the unit test. Anything turned in after that date will be worth a maximum of 50% credit. Tests must be made up within one week of an absence, tests made up after that date are ineligible for a retake.
Technology Usage:
My classroom has a strict no cell-phone usage policy. Students may not have them out for any reason. Phone usage in class (even for academic purposes) has been shown to lower retention, focus, and drops standardized test scores. We want everyone to be as successful as possible, hence the reason for this policy. Should students desire to use a calculator they must bring an independent scientific or graphing calculator.
Office Hours and Tutoring:
I am available every day after school from 2:25-2:55 PM for students who need extra help or one-on-one time. I may be available during other times by appointment. If you begin struggling please let me know immediately and we will get you the help you need to succeed.
